New to this topic? Start with our complete guide: UETR: what a UETR is, where to find it, and how to track a payment with one.

To find the SWIFT payment reference, you should check your payment confirmation or receipt. The SWIFT payment reference is a unique identifier assigned to each payment sent through the SWIFT network and is typically included in the payment confirmation or receipt. It is located in the field 20 of MT103 form.

If you are the sender of the payment, you can usually find the SWIFT payment reference in your bank statement or transaction history. You can also contact your bank for assistance in locating the reference number.

If you are the recipient of the payment, you should check with your bank or financial institution to see if they have received the payment and if they can provide you with the SWIFT payment reference.

The length of a SWIFT payment reference can vary depending on the bank or financial institution that is using it. It can be numberic or alphanumeric depending on the bank's software configuration.

Where to find UETR code?

The SWIFT UETR (Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference) code is a unique identifier assigned to each SWIFT payment message to enable end-to-end tracking of the transaction.

If you are the sender of the payment, you can usually find the SWIFT UETR code in the confirmation or receipt provided by your bank or financial institution. The UETR code may also be visible in your transaction history or bank statement. Sometimes it is included in the header of MT103 form in the field 121.

If you are the sender of the payment, you can request the SWIFT UETR code from your bank or financial institution. They should be able to provide you with this information.

It's important to note that the SWIFT UETR code is different from the SWIFT payment reference, which is another identifier used in SWIFT payments. The payment reference is used to identify a specific payment transaction, while the UETR code is used to track the payment throughout its journey in the SWIFT network.

How UETR code looks like?

UETR code is a 32-character alphanumeric code. For example, da35a802-0593-4c47-8fd3-007435d8e495.

Should I use payment reference # or UETR for tracking?

You can try both. Usually UETR code is more universal, because it doesn't change throughout transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my UETR number?

Look at the payment confirmation your bank gave you. On an MT103 it is field 121 in the message header. In a pacs.008 (ISO 20022) it is the UETR element inside the payment identification block. Many bank receipts print it as UETR, gpi reference or end-to-end reference. If it is not on your receipt, the sending bank can always provide it.

Is a UETR the same as a transaction reference number?

No. A transaction reference number (field 20) is assigned by the sending bank and can change at every bank in the chain. The UETR is generated once when the payment is created and stays identical end to end, which is what makes it the reliable tracking key.

Can I track a payment with only the UETR?

Often yes. Banks in the SWIFT gpi network can locate a payment by UETR alone. Trackers typically ask for the amount, currency and date as well, to confirm the match and protect the payment data. Ohmyfin uses the UETR plus those details to show the latest available SWIFT status.
