Frequently asked questions

What is a SWIFT / BIC code?

A SWIFT code, also called a BIC (Business Identifier Code), is a standardized 8 or 11 character code defined by the ISO 9362 standard. It uniquely identifies a bank, EMI or PSP in international payments and tells the sending bank where to route the money.

What is the difference between a SWIFT code and a BIC?

There is no difference. BIC (Business Identifier Code) is the official term used in the ISO 9362 standard, while SWIFT code is the everyday name for the same code, because the codes are administered through the SWIFT network.

How often is the SWIFT / BIC directory updated?

Our directory follows the ISO 9362 standard and is refreshed monthly, in line with the regular BIC publication cycle, so newly assigned and amended codes are reflected shortly after they are issued.

Is the SWIFT / BIC code directory free to use?

Yes. Searching for a bank by its BIC and browsing institutions by country is free reference data. A paid plan or credits are only needed for correspondent banking (SSI) reports and payment tracking.
